V. R. Nedunchezhiyan Biography

V. R. Nedunchezhiyan was an Indian politician from the state of Tamil Nadu who served as the CM of Tamil Nadu twice. He was the second chief minister of Tamil Nadu after C. N. Annadurai. A member of 1967 State assembly election soon after the formation of Tamil Nadu state, he had a brief career of just 7 days as CM of Tamil Nadu. He served as Chief Minister on chair during 3 February 1969 - 10 February 1969, and DMK leader K. Karunanidhi succeeded him. It was K. Karunanidhi’s first term as Tamil Nadu CM. Nedunchezhiyan was also a member of DMK, a regional party of Tamil Nadu. Interestingly Nedunchezhiyan also served as 8th CM of Tamil Nadu for a brief period of 15 days between 24 December 1987 and 7 January 1988, after being elected to 1984 State assembly election, this time representing AIADMK.

Nedunchezhiyan was born at Thirukkannapuram on 11 July 1920. He entered politics during his academic years at Annamalai University when he joined the Dravidar Kazhagam party in 1944. He along with Annadurai formed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1949. Annadurai became the leader and Nedunchezhiyan acted as deputy general secretary until 1955. He later served as the general secretary of the party till 1961, followed by chairman of the party's general council until 1969.

Nedunchezhiyan got elected to the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu for the first time in 1962 from Triplicane constituency, and he retained the same seat in 1967 and 1971 state assembly elections too. When DMK came into power in 1967, he became the cabinet minister. Following Annadurai's death in 1969, he briefly acted as CM before Karunanidhi took over the position. He got elected to state assembly in 1977, 1980, 1984,1889 and 1991 elections too.

After Karunanidhi lost power in 1976, Nedunchezhiyan left the DMK to form a new political party alongside Sathyavani Muthu and called the Makkal DMK. But the party got merged to the ruling party, Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and he was given a cabinet rank in 1980. He held the position of Finance Minister from 1980 to 1987. A co-incidence, he acted as CM of Tamil Nadu following MGR’s death in 1987 for 15 days, and was succeeded by Janaki Ramachandran. He later served as Finance Minister during 1991-1996 under Jayalalithaa’s cabinet.
