V. Maitreyan Biography
V. Maitreyan is an Indian politician and parliamentarian from the state of Tamil Nadu, associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He is currently serving his third term as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was first elected to upper house in 2002. He is also a physician and oncologist by profession. He has written articles in many Indian and foreign medical journals. Currently he is fully concentrating on to his political career.
Dr. Vasudevan Maitreyan was born on 21 November 1955 in a Vadagalai Iyengar family in Tamil Nadu. His father K. R. Vasudevan was an Indian independence activist. His mother’s name is Manga Vasudevan. He spent his childhood in Chennai where he completed his school studies. Later he completed his MBBS from Nagpur. Then he pursued his M. D. in Medical Oncology from the Madras Medical College and did his D. M. in Medical Oncology from the Cancer Institute, Madras University, before beginning his career as an oncologist in Tamil Nadu.
He was an active member of RSS right from his academic years. He became an executive member of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1991. In 1995 he was appointed as the General Secretary of the party in Tamil Nadu, and he served this position for a couple of years, before he became Vice President of the party in 1997 and President of the party in 1999. In 2000, he resigned from the BJP and joined Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK.
He served as the medical wing president of the party and later has been nominated to Rajya Sabha thrice. He was relieved from the position of medical wing president of the party before he was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2013 for the third time.
