Usha Upadhyay Biography

Dr. Usha Upadhyay is a veteran writer associated with Gujarati language. She currently works as the Head of the Department of Gujarati in Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad. She is the vice president of the Gujarati Writers' Association. She has authored several plays, essays, poetry and stories in Gujarati language. Jal Billori (1998), Arundhatino Taro (2006) and Shyam Pankhi Aav Aav (2013) are her published poetry works. Many of her works have been translated to other Indian languages and English.

Usha was born on 7 June 1956 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. She completed his graduation and master’s in Gujarati and also completed her PhD studies. She was a Research Fellow of UGC from 1978 to 1982 for Ph. D. She completed her research on the subjects - Symbols in Post-Independence Gujarati Poetry. She received UGC minor Research Project from 1999 to 2001 Fellowship, UGC Junior Research Fellowship and UGC Senior Research Fellowship for her research works. After studies she started her career as a lecturer, and currently works as a professor at Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad. Now she has more than 20 years of experience in post-graduate level.

She published a children’s story Ek Hati Roopa in 1999. Her literary criticism works include – Ikshit, Sahitya Sannidhi, Alokparva, Samprat Gujarati Sahitya, Aksharne ajvale, Gujarati Sanshodhan-Sampadan etc. She has edited several works and done some translation works too. Her other major works include - Gujarati Sahityano Gyan Samvad - Nimbandho, Shunyatama Purela Dariyano Tarkhat, Radhakrishna Vina Biju Bol Ma, Sahitya Sannidhi, Alokparva, Ikshit, Samprat Gujarati Sahitya, Aksharne ajvale etc. Batubhai Umarwadiya prize by Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, Bhagini Nivedita prize and Sauhard Samman Puraskar are some of the honours received by her.
