Uma Bhatt Biography

Uma Bhatt is an Indian writer and scholar. She also owns a career as a journalist and works as founder-editor of a magazine named Uttara for women. Kamla Pant, Basanti Pathak, and Sheela Rajwar are the co-founders of this women-centric magazine. She is also known for feminist writings, and edited many works as well. For almost 25 years, Uttara has instilled pride in the women of Kumaon through her writings. She is also involved with social work and political issues in her home state of Uttarakhand.

 

Uma hails from Uttarakhand. In 1990 she co-founded the magazine Uttara for women. As a writer she writes poetry, fiction works and also authors works on social issues and women related subjects. She works as the editor of the magazine which addresses women’s issues as well as promotes their works. It also features stories of common women. She wrote an article about “Anti Liquor Movement in Uttarakhand" in the 1980s to spearhead the campaign for women to fight against alcoholism, which kills their husbands as well as society. It also told how this business negatively affects family business.

 

She also advocated a separate state in Uttar Pradesh, and the state was finally formed in year 2000. The state was named as Uttarakhand. She currently serves as a linguist in the Department of Hindi at Kumaon University, Nainital, apart from her regular works as a writer and editor of magazine. Her magazine Uttara celebrated silver jubilee in 2015. It also publishes many works, apart from publishing stories revolving around women’s issues in the hills. Since the magazine was started, the founders have decided that there were to be no recipes, no beauty treatment pieces, no sewing or embroidery talks in their magazine.
