Udayan Vajpeyi Biography

Udayan Vajpeyi is a noted fiction and poetry writer belonging to Hindi language. He is known as a Hindi poet, essayist, short fiction and script writer. Two volumes of poetry, a short story collection, a book of essays, apart from numerous articles – is his contribution to Indian literature. Many of his works have been translated to Indian and foreign languages like Bengali, Tamil, Oriya, Kannada, English, French, Swedish, Polish and Bulgarian. Indian government honoured him with a senior fellowship in 1994.

 

Currently he serves as a lecturer at Physiology at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Samas in three volumes, Abhed Aakash, Kuchh Vakya, Pagal Ganitagya Ki Kavitayen and Vie Invisible are among his noted publications. Udayan has also translated several internationally acclaimed works of foreign writers to Hindi. Now, when a trend has arose among Indian writers to return back Sahitya Academy awards, Udayan is one among those accomplished fellows who remarks that writers will achieve little by returning their awards.

 

Udayan Vajpeyi was born in Bhopal in 1960 and is a doctor by profession. He teaches physiology, in addition to his contributions as an author. He published a book of recreated folktales and an account of an extended conversation with Mani Kaul, an accomplished cine artist and director. He translated the works of Octavio Paz, Borges, Chekhov, Brodsky, Jaccottet, Tadeus Rozewicz and many acclaimed writers known globally. He was given a Senior Fellowship from the Government of India for two years in 1994. Krishna Baldev Award (2001) and the Raja Foundation Award (2003) are other major awards received by him. He pens articles for Hindi daily regularly.
