Tribhuvandas Luhar Biography

Tribhuvandas Luhar was a noted writer from Gujarat. He was extremely popular as a Gujarati poet. He received Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1934 for his poetry collection - Kavyamangala. His critic work Avalokan earned him Gujarati Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 1968. The poetry collection Yatra earned him Narmad Gold Medal in 1955. Though he published critic works, poetry, travelogues and short stories, he gained popularity as a poet. His works are known for its imagination, brilliance and intensity. Associated with social and spiritual elements, his works have clearly shown a transition from progressivism, communism, Gandhian philosophy and self-realization – the different forms of philosophy.

He was born on 22 March 1908 at Miyan matar, Bharuch. His school education was completed at various schools of Gujarat and he completed graduation from Gujarat Vidyapith in 1929. He started his professional career as a teacher at Gurukul at Songadh, though he plunged into freedom struggle movement and got imprisoned. Later he associated with many social activities for noble causes. As a social activist he was quite active during the period 1935 to 1945. After that he got inspired by revolutionary turned saint Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy and he moved to Pondicherry.

Though he excelled in poetry he became successful in other forms of literature as well. Started writing poetry in 1926 under pen name, ‘Marichi’, Ekansh De was his first published poems. He later used the pen name Vishwakarma for his next few works, followed by the name, Sundaram, which he carried throughout his life. His first poetry collection was published in the year 1933 - Koya Bhagatni Kadvi Vaani ane Garibo na Geeto. He also published the short story collection under the pen name – Trishul. Arvachin Kavita, Avalokan and Sahitya Chintan are his critic works.
