Thi. Janakiraman Biography

Thi. Janakiraman, also known as Thi Jaa and T. Janakiraman was a famous writer associated with Tamil literature. He is considered one of the major figures of Tamil fiction in the 20th century. Many of his works have been adapted to plays and movies. He published novels, Novellas, Short stories collections, Travelogues, plays and a few translation works. In 1979, he was awarded the prestigious Tamil Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection titled, Sakthi Vaidhiyam. Malar Manjam, Uyirthen and Semparuthy are his other notable works. He passed away on 18 November 1982 aged 61. All of the novels written by him have feminine feelings incorporated in the themes.

 

Janakiraman was born into a Tamil Brahmin family in Madras Presidency in 1921, during British rule. His birthday falls on 28 February. He worked as a civil servant. Yet he was fully active in his literal career. T. Janakiraman wrote around a dozen novels and almost one hundred short stories. His novel titled, Mogamul is his masterpiece work, which was made to a feature film in 1995 with the same title. His novels - Marappasu and Amma Vandhal have been translated into English, titled as Wooden Cow and Sins of Appu's Mother respectively. Uyirthen, Malar Manjam and Semparuthy are among his most popular short stories.

 

Mogamul, Malar Manjam, Adi, Nalabaagam, Uyirthen, Amma Vandhaal, Marappasu, Semparuthi, Sivagnanam, Anbe Aaramudhe, Kamalam and Amirtham are the famous novels authored by Janakiraman, while Akbar Shastri, Erumai Pongal, Aboorva Manidhargal, Manidhabimaanam, Sakthi Vaithiyam, Pidi Karunai, Yaadhum Oore, Sivappu Rickshaw and Kottumelam among his most read short stories. His visits to Japan and Crimea have been recorded in his travelogue works such as Udhaya Sooriyan, Nadandhaai Vaazhi Kaveri, Adutha Veedu Aimbadhu Mile and Karunkadalum Kalaikkadalum.
