Tathagata Roy Biography

Tathagata Roy is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who currently serves as Governor of Tripura since 20 May 2015. He held the additional charge of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in 2016. He has been an engineer in profession, who was into construction field. A BJP leader from West Bengal, he was the president of the West Bengal state unit of BJP from 2002 till 2006, and also a member of the BJP National Executive during 2002-2015. Roy has been a controversial man since the beginning of his political career in 1990, and remained one of the finest civil engineers of the country before.

 

Roy was born on 14 September 1945 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. He studied Civil Engineering in Bengal Engineering College Sibpur, which is now known as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology. After studies he joined Indian Railways as an engineer, and later held many positions like General Manager, RITES and as Chief Engineer. He also completed his LLB studies. Roy took voluntary retirement from the Railways in 1990, and started his career in teaching field. He is the founder head of the Department of Construction Engineering, Jadavpur University and has remained as Chairman Board of Governors of TTTI Kolkata during 2000-2005.

 

He became a Swayamsevak in 1986, and joined active politics soon after his retirement from railways in 1990. He unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha in 2009 from the North Kolkata constituency of West Bengal and 2014 general elections from Kolkata Dakshin. In May 2015 he was appointed as Governor of Tripura. In 2018 stepped into limelight after his controversial tweets made headlines, and it also risked his position as governor of small state Tripura.
