Tarun Kanti Mishra Biography

Tarun Kanti Mishra is a former IAS officer and an Indian writer from Odisha best known as story teller. He published 19 books, mostly belonging to short story genre. He is an IAS officer by profession, decorating several administration posts, but currently retired. He got Odisha Sahitya Academy award in 1997 and Sarala Award in 2001 for his contribution towards Odia literature. Katha Award, New Delhi and Think Orissa Leadership Award – 2009 are other honours received by him. he has been honoured with D.Litt by North Odisha University.

Tarun Kanti Mishra was born on 2 August 1950 in Kendujhar, Odisha. Currently he is settled in the capital city, Bhubaneswar. His schooling was completed in Cuttack, and graduation and Master’s degree from Utkal University. He later moved to UK and completed his Master’s degree. He wanted to become a teacher. But he gave in to parents’ dreams, and became an administrative officer. He joined Indian Administrative Service in 1975, and remained in service till 2010. He retired as the head of the administration department of Odisha. After retirement, he served as State Information Commissioner for many years.

His literal journey began in his childhood, and he published his first short story Hey Pruthibira Naagarika in a literary magazine at the age of 14. Later he turned a prolific storyteller, publishing several books in Odiya language. He published 18 poetry collections and one novel. His first anthology of short stories was published in 1968, while as a college student. Aakasha Setu, Aabrtara Duiti Swara, Nisangatara Swara, Bahubrihi, Lubdhakara Raati, Aji Ratir Galpa, Bhaswati, Kehi Jane Eka Eka, Paaraadise Pakhi, Jane Nirastra Attatayi, Bitansa, Prajaapatira Denaa Naahi, Komala Gandhaara etc are among his published books.
