Syed Badrudduja Biography

Syed Badrudduja was a prominent politician from Bengal who lived during the period, 4 January 1900 – 18 November 1974. He was a parliamentarian, and activist, who also served as Mayor of Kolkata. Known for his association with the anti-colonials movements like Khilafat Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement, he has served as a member of both state legislative assembly and parliament. His eldest daughter Syeda Razia Faiz is a famous Bangladeshi politician. He died on 18 November 1974. As a politician he was involved with Progressive Muslim League in Bengal.

Syed Badrudduja was born on 4 January 1900 in Talibpur village, Murshidabad district of present day West Bengal. He did early education from Talibpur Khareji Madrasa. He completed his advanced studies from the city of Kolkata. He completed his LLB studies from Presidency College, Kolkata. His active career in politics started with his association with Progressive Muslim League. He also served as the secretary of the party. In the pre-independent era, he was associated with Indian freedom struggle movement, and was in constant touch with some of the great leaders of the time.

Apart from Progressive Muslim League, he was also associated with Krishak Praja Party, Independent Democratic Party, Progressive Assembly Party and Progressive Coalition Party, serving as President or Secretary at different points of time. He also served as Mayor of Kolkata from 1943 to 1944. After partition in 1947, he preferred to stay in India, where he continued with his political and social life. He served as a member of Bengal Legislative Assembly during 1940—46, West Bengal Legislative Assembly, 1948—52 and 1957—62. He joined Lok Sabha for the first time in 1962 and served a term of 5 years. He retained the seat in next Lok Sabha elections too.
