Swati Bhise Biography

Swati Bhise is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher and choreographer from Mumbai, Maharashtra. She adopts Pandanallur style. Swati was featured in a CBS documentary called 'Sacred Arts', as one of the foremost performers in her field. She served as an artist in residence at the Brearley School, New York City from 1991-2006. She has also worked as an executive producer in film industry. In 2012, Swati founded The Sadir Theater Festival, an annual festival held at Goa attended by artists and celebrities from all over India. Apart from traditional classical forms, she has also choreographed contemporary and fusion dance forms.

 

Swati Bhise was born in Mumbai. She is credited to be the first disciple of acclaimed dancer Sonal Mansingh. Swati performed her arangettam at Center of Indian Classical Dances in New Delhi. Since then she has performed in different parts of India, and travelled abroad as well, with her performances. She has performed in Symphony Space, Metropolitan Museum of Art, SPIC MACAY and many more stages around the globe. She has also taught at different places and has been a residence artist at Brearley School, New York City for long 15 years since early 1990s. Currently she teaches at The Curriculum in Arts Program at Symphony Space, and performs at Lincoln Center Institute regularly.

 

As a Bharatanatyam dancer, she has worked on key elements of classical dramatic compositions, and made fusion work of various traditional and contemporary dance forms. Swati’s hallmark is the statuesque and expressive Pandanallur style. Apart from her cultural activities, she is also known to be a philanthropist associated with women’s empowerment. She is an advisor to The Asia Foundation.
