Surjit Patar Biography

Dr. Surjit Patar is a noted writer from Punjab who has published many popular poems like "Candles”, "Hanere vich sulagdi Varanmala” and "Aiya Nand Kishore". He is also known as a translator of books. A winner of Sahitya Akademi Award and Saraswati Samman, he has also written the dialogues for the movie - Shaheed Uddham Singh and Videsh. Hanere vich Sulghdi Varnmala – earned him Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993. He is also a recipient of Punjab Sahitya Akademi Award and Padma Shri (2012). Currently he serves as the President of Punjab Sahitya Academy.

 

He was born on 14 January 1945 on Pattar Kalan of Jalandhar district, Punjab. ‘Pattar’ tag later got added to his name as surname. After graduation from Kapurthala, he completed Master’s from Punjabi University, Patiala. He earned a PhD in Literature on "Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani" from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Then he started his career as a lecturer and continued his job till his retirement as a professor from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.

 

His literal career began during his early college days in the mid-1960s. He wrote poetry during this period and later moved to other versions of literature as well. Hawa Vich Likhe Harf, Birkh Arz Kare, Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varnmala, Lafzaan Di Dargah, Patjhar Di Pazeb and Surzameen are his noted poetry works. Some of his translation works include - three tragedies of Federico García Lorca, poetry works of Bertolt Brecht and Pablo Neruda etc.

 

Apart from Sahitya Academy awards and Padma Sri, he is also a recipient of Panchnad Puruskar by Bhartiya Bhasha Parishad Kolkata in 1999, Kusumagraj Literary Award 2014, Saraswati Samman by K.K.Birla foundation in 2009, Anad Kav Sanman in 2008 etc.
