Sunil Prabhu Biography

Sunil Prabhu is an Indian politician belonging to Shiv Sena Party who served as the 74^thmayor of the city of Mumbai. Currently he is an MLA of Shiv Sena, representing Dindoshi state assembly constituency. He got elected in the year 2014 to 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He started his political career in the early 1990s, working as a personal assistant to a senior Shiv Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar. He was 42 when he was elected as the Mayor of Mumbai, one of the youngest mayors of the city.

Started off as a personal secretary, with the mid-1990s he became fully active in the Mumbai city/corporation politics and got elected to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation successively for four times since 1997. When he got elected for the fourth time in 2012, he was appointed as the Major of the city- thechief of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation – India’s richest municipal body. The grand alliance of Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party -Republican Party of India (RPI) won the elections.

Sunil Prabhu was elected as the 74th mayor of Mumbai with 125 votes while Deputy Mayor Mohan Mithbaokar got 122 votes. Sunil defeated Congress nominee Sunil More in the elections. Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and party executive president Uddhav supported him for a two-and-a –half year term as mayor before the state assembly elections, so that he can better interact with common man. He resigned the post in 2014 to conduct the state assembly elections which he won. Currently he serves as the MLA of Dindoshi constituency. A good orator with superb organizational skills, Prabhu has earlier served as thechairman of the powerful standing committee of the BMC.
