Sundari K. Shridharani Biography

Sundari K. Shridharani was an accomplished dancer, performing artist and the founder - director of Triveni Kala Sangam, a multi-arts institution, which she established in the year 1950. She was married to noted Gujarati poet, playwright and writer of English non-fiction, Krishnalal Shridharani. Born In Hyderabad, Sind of undivided India, she started learning dance while in Santiniketan and had an illustrious career over 6 decades. For her outstanding contributions to the world of arts, Indian government honoured her with Padma shri in the year 1991. She was posthumously honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012. She passed away in April 2012, one day after her 93rd birthday.

 

She was born on April 6, 1925 in Hyderabad. She joined Santiniketan at a young age, where she got initiated to the world of arts and traditional dance forms. After that she joined the Uday Shankar Indian Cultural Centre, at Almora, where she got opportunity to learn Kathakali and Manipuri Dance. Then she joined Ginner Mawer School of Dance and Drama, London where she learnt Greek Dance. In the late 1940s she got married to the famous writer, Krishnalal Shridharani. Since 1940s, she got opportunity to perform at various prestigious concerts including the first International Youth Festival in Prague in 1947.

 

She founded Triveni Kal Sangam in 1950 in a single room and terrace at a Coffee House in Delhi, where she taught many students. Her efforts caught the attention of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who allotted half acre land for her education institution. Though she started off with small functions with a small group of people, through her tireless efforts Triveni Kal Sangam later got established as one of the leading dance academies of the country. Lost her husband during her middle ages in 1960, she lived a long life of 93 years and lived within the premises of Triveni.
