Sukhpal Singh Khaira Biography

Sukhpal Singh Khaira is an Indian politician belonging to Punjab, who served as Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly during 20 July 2017 – 26 July 2018. A former member of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and a Member of Punjab Legislative Assembly of Bholath since 2017, he came to spotlight soon after he resigned as leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in January 2019. He was suspended from AAP for alleged “anti-party activities” and for “continuously attacking central and state leadership” in November last year. He is expected to launch his new political party Punjab Democratic Alliance on January 8 in Chandigarh.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira hails from Kapurthala, Punjab. He was born in the year 1965 into a political family. His father Sukhjinder Singh Khaira was a veteran Akali leader and former Punjab education minister. Following his father’s footsteps, Sukhpal Singh Khaira too took the same path of politics, and rose to prominent positions within regional politics. He remained a leader of AAP till he officially resigned from the party on January 5, 2019. He completed his schooling from Bishop Cotton School, Shimla.

He got into politics in the mid-1990s, and was associated with Indian National Congress till he met Arvind Kejriwal in early 2015. After that he switched his political affiliation to Aam Aadmi Party. As a youth leader he has been associated with INC for many years. After moving to new party, he successfully conducted 2017 state assembly elections, and won a seat representing AAP. He also served as leader of opposition till 26 July 2018. He earned the title as a rebel leader within the party and politics, and very soon he saw exit from the party.
