Sudarshan Faakir Biography

Sudarshan Faakir was an Indian poet and lyricist who penned numerous ghazals and nazms for many leading singers like Begum Akhtar and Jagjit Singh. Sudarshan Kamra is his real name and ‘Faakir’ is his pen name. Sudarshan Faakir is the first lyricist to have won a Filmfare Award for his very first song. Hum Sab Bhartiya Hain is one of his most popular songs, written for National NCC. He was loved by millions of ghazal fans across the world.

 

He gave a whole new perspective to love, life and melancholy through his famous ghazals - “ishq mein ghairate-jazbaat ne rone na diya” and “ye kaghaz ki kashti…ye baarish ka pani”. His devotional song - 'Hey Ram... Hey Ram’ is also popular. He died on February 18, 2008 in Jalandhar after prolonged illness, aged 73. He belongs to the group of very rare non-Muslim Urdu poets of India and his works are remarkable for its profundity and perfection, though not counted among the prolific ones.

 

Sudarshan Fakhir was born in 1934 in Ferozpur. He spent most of his life time in Jalandhar where he did his job as a teacher. Since college days he was active in writings. It’s said that a failed love affair prompted him to shift from his hometown to Jalandhar. In those days, he lived in sorrows and poems, deeply disturbed, yet continued meetings with poet friends. His works written during this period deeply reflected his sorrows. Later he completed Master’s in political science and briefly worked in AIR. Then he left to Mumbai to join film industry. ‘Zindagi, zindagi, mere ghar aana zindagi' of Dooriyan is one of his popular songs. He loved watching cricket and lived a simple life.
