Sudama Pandey Dhoomil Biography

Sudama Pandey “Dhoomil” is better known as the ‘Angry young man of Hindi poetry’. He was called so due to revolutionary writings and his "protest-poetry” that can be grouped under rebellious nature. During his lifetime he has published only one book titled Samsad se Sarak Tak, which includes a collection of poems. But his next collection of poems, Kal Sunna Mujhe was published in 1979 posthumously and won Sahitya Akademi Award in Hindi. He died on February 10, 1975, at the young age of 38 years so suddenly due to one or more undiagnosed illnesses with his mission left unfinished. His noted poem, "Ghar Main Wapsi" is a part of school syllabus in NCERT text books. Earlier his radical poems, "Mochiram" was a part of the syllabus which was later removed by an objection placed by BJP in 2006. Mochiram was replaced by Ghar Main Wapsi.

 

This revolutionary writer was born on November 9, 1936 in Khewali, Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh. Dhoomil was his pen name. After completing his school education, he joined the Industrial training institute in Varanasi and earned a Diploma in Electricals. Later he joined the same institute as an instructor in the Electricals Department. He was known as a young poet since his youth days. Due to his strong personality, rough manners and rural background, he always stood among the odd and his nature of poems and personal traits gave him the title, Angry young man of Hindi poetry’. His last book - Sudama Pandey Ka Prajatantra, was published by his son Ratnashankar Pandey.

 

He died suddenly due to illness on February 10, 1975 and after his death his poems became great inspirations to Marxist party of India. As it was not easy to follow his language and depth of his knowledge, readers were not able to fully appreciate the significance of this writer when he was alive.
