Subodh Ghosh Biography

Subodh Ghosh was a noted writer and journalist from Bengal, best known for the romantic work - Bharat Premkatha. A popular novelist of the 20th century many of his novels have been adapted on Indian screen – for Hindi and Bengali movies. Ritwik Ghatak's Ajantrik (1958) and Bimal Roy's Sujata (1959) are those classic movies inspired by the stories of Ghosh. Gulzar's National award winning movie - Ijaazat (1989) and Basu Chatterjee’s Chitchor (1976) were also inspired from his work. Ghosh is a recipient of Filmfare award for best story twice – Sujata and Ijaazat. Chitchor was inspired from his story, Chittachakor which was later made to Bollywood film – Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. - Ijaazat was based on his story Jatugriho.

 

He was born in 1909 in Hazaribag of present day Jharkhand. He graduated from St. Columba's College. Ghosh started off with short stories and slowly moved to novels. He shot to fame after publishing his short story – Fossil. It was followed by the popular short story works - Bharat Premkatha and Kingbadantir Deshe. Ghosh had a deep knowledge of tribal life, which were well explored through his works. He was associated with the daily Ananda Bazar Patrika for many years.

 

Bharat Premkatha is his celebrated work, which was later translated to English as Love Stories from the Mahabharata. Many of his works have been a part of school and college syllabuses. Satkiya, Tilanjoli, Gangotri, Trijama, Preyoahy, Suno Boronari, Sujata, Jiavorli, Bosonto Tilok and Bagdatta are among his published novels. Ajantrik, Jotugriha, Pushpakeet, Teen Oddhay, Shock Therapy, Olik, Orchid, Swashanchampa, Raater Pakhi and Supriya are a few of his popular stories. Mrinal Sen's 1971 Hindi film Ek Adhuri Kahani based on story, Gotrantar. He passed away in 1980 in Kolkata.
