Soorya Krishnamoorthy Biography

Nataraja Krishnamoorthy, better known as Soorya Krishnamoorthy is a theatre artist, better known as the founder of SOORYA Stage and Film Society, which annually conducts Soorya Festival in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city – the longest and one of the most prestigious cultural events in India. Soorya Festival is the most prominent cultural festival of Kerala which promotes Indian classical dance forms and music. Many prominent artists across the country are invited to perform in the festival, which include many film artists too. Soorya is the largest cultural society of Asia and Soorya Festival is the largest and the longest Festival of Asia.He is also a pioneer of the Light and Sound show in Malayalam and ‘Theatre of Freedom’ is his new innovation which is a mobile form of this show.

 

Soorya Krishnamoorthy is a native of Kottayam. He was born in the year 1951 into a family of engineers. His father Nataraja Pillai was a Chief engineer. He did his schooling in Government Model High School, Thiruvananthapuram and completed graduation in Engineering, from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, in 1971. He was also a badminton player during his college days. Soon after completing engineering he joined ISRO in 1972 as a scientist. He worked under many leading scientists of the country in the 1970s and the prominent name was India’s former president - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. He was associated with ISRO for long 27 years.

 

He made his theatre debut through the play – Melvilasom, based on the subject of caste discrimination. The play was later made to a feature film with the same name by a debutant director, Madhav Ramadasan and earned accolades. Its original screenplay is credited to Soorya Krishnamoorthy. He currently serves as the cultural ambassador of Kerala. He has played a major role in the inflow of tourists through the cultural programs he organize.
