Sohag Sen Biography

Sohag Sen is Tollywood’s most sought-after workshop director. She has coached many aspiring actors of Bengali film industry. A few of such leading names include – Prosenjit, Dev, Konkona Sensharma and Koel Mallick. She regularly conducts acting workshops. She is known for her works in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), The Japanese Wife (2010) and Buno Haansh (2014). Sen feels that now actors, so busy now are not undergoing very serious workshops and now everything is so fast. She believes in acting workshops than rehearsals that can save both time and money for film shooting. She started off as a stage actor in the year 1969 and later directed many plays such as The Informer, a one-act play. She founded a theatre group in 1983.

She started off with preparatory workshops for her group. She knew Aparna Sen, noted film personality since then, who used to rehearse her artists before the final take. One day Aparna invited her to do the workshop for Yugant. That’s how she got into the field of acting workshops and later she took it as profession seriously. Anjan Dutt and Roopa Ganguly were also involved with that workshop which continued for three months. Later she worked with many artists of the industry and her work is often misinterpreted as an acting coach. She is a facilitator to actors and crew, and not a teacher.

Apart from Aparna Sen she has worked with many leading directors of Bengali film industry like Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Goutam Ghose. She worked with Shabana Azmi for the film - 15 Park Avenue. Raima Sen and Konkona Sensharma are the successful Bengali actresses whom she has groomed and she feels proud about. In fact Konkana has won National award for her performance for the movie - Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Sohag Sen was associated with.
