Shreekumar Varma Biography

Shreekumar Varma is a noted writer and journalist from Thiruvananthapuram. He is also known as an editor, publisher, printer, radio broadcaster, entrepreneur and college lecturer. His poems and articles regularly appear in several publications and Internet sites. He writes for The New Indian Express, The Economic Times Madras Plus, Ritz Magazine and the Deccan Herald. He is a visiting lecturer in Creative English at the Chennai Mathematical Institute. As a writer, his best known works are Devil's Garden: Tales Of Pappudom, Lament of Mohini, Maria's Room, Pazhassi Raja: The Royal Rebel and The Magic Store of Nu-Cham-Vu. He belongs to the royal family of Travancore, Kerala, known by the name Punartham Thirunal. He is the great great grandson of the celebrated artist Raja Ravi Varma and grandson of Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi. Artist Rukmini Varma is his cousin.

 

Varma was born in 1955 in Satelmond Palace, Poojapura. He left Kerala along with his parents at the age of 4 and got settled in Chennai where he completed his education. He completed MA and M. Phil in English Literature from Madras Christian College and did a course in Journalism from the Bhavan's College of Journalism. He is known as a radio broadcaster for All India Radio during early days. He has also worked as a journalist of Indian Express and Cinema Today in Mumbai. Currently he lives in Mumbai fully dedicated to writing.

 

The Dark Lord and Bow Of Rama are his award winning plays, that have been successfully staged several times by the British Council. Lament of Mohini was his debut novel, published in the year 2000. He is a recipient of Charles Wallace [India] Trust fellowship.
