Shobha Naidu Biography

Shobha Naidu is a well-experienced Kuchipudi dancer from India. She is one of the foremost disciples of Vempati Chinna Satyam. She is a recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth civilian given by government of India, in recognition for the efforts towards the fields of arts and dance forms. She received this award in 2001. She is an accomplished teacher in the field of Kuchipudi who has trained hundreds of students in the past three decades. She has choreographed many dance dramas and successfully presented them in several dance festivals over the years.  

 

Shobha hails from Anakapalle, Andhra Pradesh. She was born in the year1956. She studied at Queen Mary's college. She belonged to a conservative family, and the society in which she lived didn’t allow female performers to perform on stage. Yet she received full support from her mother, who arranged dance classes for her. Shobha received initial training from P. L Reddy from Rajamahendravaram, followed by the legendary Vempati Chinna Satyam, who laid basement in her learning process. She studied long 12 years under her renowned guru and started off with her performances.

 

Apart from her career as a renowned artist, she choreographed 80 solo numbers and 15 ballets. She also remained an accomplished teacher in this field who taught over 1,500 students from India and other parts of the world. She has also performed in many cultural events and dance festivals in India and abroad, popularizing her art form. She has also led a cultural delegation to many foreign countries. She was honoured with Nritya Choodamani award in 1982 and Nritya Kala Siromani award in 1996. Padma shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award are the main honours given by government of India.
