Shobha Deepak Singh Biography

Shobha Deepak Singh is a photographer, writer, a trained classical dancer and performer, and also a cultural impresario who was honoured with Padma Shri in 1999 by government of India. She currently serves as the director of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi, which promotes different kinds of arts. This art school was founded by her mother, Sumitra Charat Ram, a patron of arts and a noted performer. Shobha revived Mayurbhanj Chhau, a tribal martial dance form from Odisha.

 

Shobha Deepak Singh was born in New Delhi on 21 October 1943 into a business family. She was born into a family of artists, also known as patron of arts. Shobha too joined the same field of her mother. She was born to Lala Charat Ram and Sumitra Charat Ram in 1943. Her school and college education were completed in Delhi itself. She graduated in Economics, and joined as a management trainee at her father's company, Delhi Cloth & General Mills, in 1964. In 1967 she married Deepak Singh and joined Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra. As a patron of arts, her new innings started from here on.

 

She later studied dance under Shambhu Maharaj and Birju Maharaj and Music under Biswajit Roy Chowdhury and Amjad Ali Khan. In 1992, she joined Living Theatre of Ebrahim Alkazi and studied theatre direction. She also secured a diploma in theatre, after which she joined as an assistant under Ebrahim Alkazi and assisted him in directing four plays. After the death of her mother in 2011, she took over the management of SBKK as its director and her husband supports her. She runs the College of Music and Dance, offering courses in Hindustani classical music in Vocals and instruments, apart from different dance forms.
