Sebastian Paul Biography

Sebastian Paul is an Indian politician from Kerala belonging to CPI (M), who is also known as a media critic and cultural activist. He presents a show, Maadhyama Vicharam on People TV every Friday at 7.30 p.m. He also publishes columns in many leading Malayalam dailies and other publications regularly, including Deshabhimani Weekly. Dr. Sebastian Paul is an advocate by profession and his protest against setting up of a High Court Bench in Thiruvananthapuram had earned him much to the dismay of Bar Association of the capital city. He is also a noted author who most recently published the book - Law, Ethics and the Media.

 

In 2016 state assembly elections he unsuccessfully contested from Thrikkakara constituency of Ernakulam district. He was defeated by P. T. Thomas of Indian National Congress by a majority of 11996 votes. He made his electoral debut in the 1997 Lok Sabha by-election in Ernakulam, where he was defeated by Antony Isaac of the INC. The following year he met with the same fate, losing to George Eden by a huge margin of about 75K votes in the Lok Sabha elections. But the same year the sitting MLA George Eden resigned and a by-election was announced. This time, Paul successfully got elected to state assembly defeating Leno Jacob of INC.

 

Since then Paul has witnessed alternate wins and losses. In 2001 state assembly elections he was defeated by Prof. K V Thomas. But in the by-election held in 2003 following the death of George Eden, he got elected to the parliament by a margin of more than 23000 votes. In 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he won a seat to parliament for the second time. Thus within a span of 7 years, he contested in 6 elections in the same constituency winning twice.
