Savitri Jindal Biography

Savitri Jindal is a politician and Non-Executive Chairperson of Jindal Steel & Power Limited, one of the leading steel companies of India. She is the wife of Om Prakash Jindal, who established the business empire of Jindal Steel & Power Limited in 1952. Om Prakash Jindal, popularly called O.P.Jindal passed away in 2005. She married Jindal in 1970, the founder the Jindal group of industries. Currently she is the richest woman in Asia, with assets worth over $14.4 billion. She also is the world's 56th richest person as on 2016. She is also credited to be the fourth richest mother. Savitri also had stint in state politics and has served as a Congress minister and member of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha representing Hissar constituency.

 

Savitri Devi Jindal was born into a traditional family in Tinsukia, Assam in 1950. She married Om Prakash Jindal at the age of 20 in 1970. She had 9 children and she led a typical Indian house wife. When O.P Jindal died in a helicopter accident in 2005, she had to take power in hands and she became the owner of a large portion of his assets. Thus she had to enter a lifestyle which she never dreamt of. Currently she is the richest woman in India and the Non-Executive Chairperson of Jindal Steel & Power Limited. She is also regarded as one of the powerful women of India.

 

In 2005, the same year of her husband’s death she entered Haryana State Politics. She got elected from Hissar constituency as a Congress candidate and held the office of Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management till 2010. After she took charge of the company, the revenue of the company quadrupled. She got re-elected in 2009 from the same constituency and served as Minister of Power of Haryana.
