Sarat Chandra Sinha Biography

Sarat Chandra Sinha was an Indian politician who served as the 5th Chief Minister of Assam during 31 January 1972 – 12 March 1978. He served as the party president of Indian Congress (Socialist) – Sarat Chandra Singha, and has been associated with Indian National Congress and Nationalist Congress Party. He was known for his value-based politics, and was quite popular among the masses for his steps for the welfare of his people. He was a true Gandhian who practiced what he preached. He also authored a few books. He passed away in Guwahati on 25 December 2005, aged 91.

 

Sarat Chandra Sinha was born on 1 January 1914 in Chapar, Assam Province, British India. He was born into an agricultural family. He did his schooling from a local school and higher studies from High School in Bilasipara, for which he had to cover 25 kms every day, either foot or with the help of a bicycle. Later he completed his graduation and law studies and practised law for a short period at Guwahati before he switched over to teaching.

 

Singha entered politics in 1946 through Indian National Congress. He entered state legislative assembly for the first time in 1946, followed by 1962, 1972 and 1985. He was first made an interim Chief Minister in 1972 by Indira Gandhi, and got elected as CM. He served in this position till 1978. He also remained a loyal member of Congress, served the party in various positions and capacities. He was instrumental in setting up the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital and Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited. He introduced Panchayati Raj in the State for the welfare of the backward communities and also promoted cooperative movement in Assam.
