Santosh Kumar Ghosh Biography

Santosh Kumar Ghosh was a famous writer associated with Bengali language, known to be a renowned novelist and short story writer. He was also an eminent journalist. Ananda Puroshkar in 1971, Bisesh Ananda in 1972 and the Sahitya Akademi Award also in 1972 are the major honours received by him. In 1984 Taiwan Kobisangha honoured him with an honorary doctorate. Apart from novels and short stories, he has also contributed in the forms of plays, essays and poems. 'Ajatak' (1969) and 'Aparthibo' (1971) are his major plays. He published his first poem - 'Prithibi' and first short story - 'Bilaati Dak' in the year 1937. His first novel - 'Kinu Goalar Gali' was published in 1950.

He was born in Faridpur, Bengal in the year 1920. His birth place currently belongs to Bangladesh. Suresh Chandra Ghosh and Sarajubala Devi were his parents. He passed B.A. examination with a distinction in 1940. After graduation he started his career as a journalist. He first worked with 'Pratyaha' Daily, followed by Jugantar and The Statesman. In 1951 he moved to Delhi and joined Hindusthan Standard. Since then he has served as a prominent journalist for many years associated with different publications. In 1976 he became the joint editor of Anandabazar Patrika.

His literary career began in the mid-1930s, and he was a teenager then. Started off with poems and short stories, he also contributed to other forms of literature as well. Since his debut novel ‘Kinu Goalar Gali' was published in 1950, he caught the attention of readers. 'Nana Ranger Din', 'Shudhar Shohor', 'Mukher Rekha', 'Renu Tomar Mon' and 'Sesh Namaskar Sricharaneshu Maa ke' are some of his novels he published later. A legendary figure of Bengali journalism, he made vast contribution to Bengali literature as well.
