Sanchita Bhattacharya Biography

Sanchita Bhattacharya is a trained classical dancer who performs Odissi, one of the oldest surviving dance forms from India. She is married to Indian classical musician Tarun Bhattacharya, a student of Ravi Shankar. As a performer, her dance works have been appreciated in India and many countries abroad. The New York Times daily noted "her dance has been described as perfection". She has served as the Cultural Ambassador of India. Kolkata Gaurav Samman 2007 by Indian Press, Dovar Lane Music Conference Award 2008, Sangeet Shyamala Award 2011 and Rash Ratna Award 2011 by Hinduthan Art and Music Society are some of the honours received by Sanchita.

Since young she wanted to become a dancer and perform on stage. However she received oppositions from all corners, and the only person to support her was mother. Her mother belonged to a family of art and culture and her maternal grandfather was a gold medalist from the Royal Art College, London. When whole society disapproved her decision to choose classical dance as a profession, her mother stood by her to pursue her dreams. Though she received an offer letter from a renowned pharmaceutical company for a dignified position, it was her mother who helped her to realize her dream.

She met Tarun Bhattacharya for the first time at an event at Kala Mandir, but the first meeting was displeasure for both of them. She behaved rude with him being late. It was a love at first sight for him, and after a few proposals, she finally gave in, and they got married. She has been awarded ‘Mahari or Devdasi’ by the Jagganath Temple, Puri, and was chosen as ‘Cultural Ambassador of India’ by the USA Senate in 2010.
