S. Ramesan Nair Biography

S. Ramesan Nair is a popular Malayalam writer best known as a poet and lyricist of Malayalam cinema. He penned lyrics for more than 450 songs for the Malayalam film industry since 1985 and has been one of the most prominent lyricists in the Malayalam 1990s and early 2000s. Known for writing lyrics in the poetry style, he has penned many noted songs of beautiful words, particularly in the 1990s. Some of such melodious nostalgic poems for films include – Oru Kunju Poovinte of Chandranudikkunna Dikkil sung by K. J. Yesudas. The popular song of 1980s – Poomukha Vaathilkal of Rakkuyilin Raagasadassil was penned by Ramesan Nair. His melodious songs of 1997 film ‘Aniyathi Pravu’ like O Priye and Oru Raagamalli are still popular.

 

Penned lyrics for numerous romantic songs for young heroes Dileep and Kunchakko Boban in their early movies (in the 1990s and 2000s), he has worked with almost all leading music directors from the veteran Raveendra Jain to Vidhyasagar. He also penned lyrics for many Jayaram movies in the 1990s. He penned lyrics for popular Dileep movies such as Chandranudikkunna Dikkil, Mazhathullikkilukkam, Soothradhaaran, Darling Darling, Dost, Pranayanilaavu, Punjabi House, Maayapponmaan, Dilliwaala Raajakumaaran etc. Songs of some of the early hits of Kunchakko Boban – Aniyathipraavu (debut film), Dost, Priyam, Sahayaathrikaykku Snehapoorvam, Darling Darling, Mayil Peeli Kaavu etc are also written by him.

 

Manju Pole, Thathammapperu Thaazhampoo and Kili Penne of Dost, Manju Peyyana, Ambadi Payyukal and Oru Kunju Poovinte of Chandranudikkunna Dikkil, Nee Nee Neeyente Jeevan and Neeyen Kinavo of Hello My Dear Wrong Number, Mangalam Padunna of Pathamudayam, Chandanam Manakkunna of Achuvettante Veedu, Therirangum Mukile of Mazhathullikkilukkam, Manikuyile of Vaalkannadi, Shalabham Vazhimaarumaa of Achaneyaanenikkishtam, Kunnimani and Katturumbinu of Priyam, Alasa Kolasa of Sahayaathrikaykku Snehapoorvam, Nandalaala of Independence, Oru manjuthulliyil and Puthumazhayayi of Akasha Ganga, Aavanipponnoonjal Aadikkam of Kottaram Veettile Appoottan, Eriyunna Kanal and Sonare of Punjabi House, Mayilai of Mayil Peeli Kaavu, Madhuvidhuraavukale of Aadyathe Kanmani, Vaarthinkal paalkkudamenthum of Njangalude Kochu Doctor etc are among his most popular lyrics.

 

He has also penned lyrics for movies - Raagam, Sree Narayana Guru, Dheem Tharikidathom, Kanmashi, Malayaali Maamanu Vanakkam, Meghasandesham (2001), Raakshasa Raajaavu, Aakaashathile Paravakal, Naraanathu Thamburan, Sreekrishnapurathu Nakshathrathilakkam, Meenakshikkalyaanam, Mele Vaaryathe Maalaakhakkuttikal, The Warrant, Sparsham, Daivathinte Makan, Naadan Pennum Naattupramaaniyum, Njangal Santhushtaraanu, Pranayamazha, Sooryaputhran, Samaantharangal, Super Man, Katha Nayakan, The Car, Guru, Aniyan Baava Chettan Baava, Ghazal, Charithram etc are among his memorable works. No doubt he is one of the top lyricists since mid-1990s.   

 

S. Ramesan Nair was born 3 May 1948 in Kumarapuram of Kanyakumari District (present day Tamil Nadu). He completed graduation in Economics in the year 1966, followed by Master’s in Malayalam literature in 1972. As a writer, some of his noted works include – Soorya Hridayam, Kalippaattangal, Alakananda, Sarayu Theeram, Swathi Megham, Janma Puranam, Agrepashyami, Kuttikalude Chilappathikaaram, Urumbuvari etc belonging to different genres. For the translation work of Chilappathikaram, he received Poothezhan Award 1980. Idassery award for Sooryahridayam (1983), Kavana Kauthukam Award for Swathi Megham (1985), Guru Chengannur Smaraka Award, Odakkuzhal Award, Vennikkulam Smaraka Award etc are the major honours.

 

He got noticed for poems written in ‘Bhavageetham’ style. He translated several Tamil old classics to Malayalam. 1985 movie – Pathamudayam (Malayalam remake of Kaalicharan) marked his film debut as a lyricist. Since 1975 he worked in Akashvani as an editor and now has retired from service. Now he dedicates full time to writings.
