Ranjit Hoskote Biography

Ranjit Hoskote is an Indian writer, curator, art critic and cultural theorist. He is best known as an Indian poet who writes in English. He has authored more than 25 works. Vanishing Acts: New & Selected Poems 1985-2005 and Die Ankunft der Vogel are among her noted works. He has translated a few works of Lal Ded - mystic Kashmiri poet of 14th century, titled ‘I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded’. He also regularly writes poems for many leading journals and magazines. He belongs to the group of those young poets who started publishing their works with 1990s.

 

He was born in Mumbai in 1969. He holds MA in English Literature and Aesthetics. He started publishing his works in the early 1990s. Then he began his career as a journalist. Hoskote was principal art critic for The Times of India, Mumbai from 1988 to 1999. He also regularly wrote poems and translations for many leading magazines. A weekly column of lively cultural commentary, "Ripple Effects" for The Times was very popular. After that he served as a senior editor of The Hindu, from 2000 to 2007. He was an art critic and cultural commentator during this time.

 

Apart from the works of Lal Ded, he has also translated the works of Marathi poet Vasant Abaji Dahake and German writer Ilija Trojanow’s works. Hoskote has been a Fellow of the International Writing Program, University of Iowa (1995). Hoskote curated his first exhibition in 1995 at the age of 25. It was titled -'Hinged by Light' and after that he has conceived and organised twenty exhibitions of contemporary artists.
