Rana Dasgupta Biography

Rana Dasgupta is a British Indian novelist and essayist from Canterbury, England. He is currently settled in England and is a British citizen. Before he reached 40 he became one of the leading British novelists representing present generation and his name was included in this list by The Daily Telegraph in 2010. He is a recipient of Commonwealth Prize and the Ryszard Kapuściński Award, and many more honours. He currently serves as the Literary Director of JCB Prize for Literature established in India in 2018.

Rana Dasgupta was born on 5 November 1971 in Canterbury, England. He is of Indian origin. His wife Shruti Belliappa is an art curator and Founding Editor of Hanuman Editions. He published his first novel, Tokyo Cancelled in 2005 which dealt with the subject of globalization. The book was shortlisted for the 2005 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Dasgupta's second novel, Solo published in 2009 has been translated to 20 languages. The book won the prestigious Commonwealth Writers' Prize, both the region and overall best-book prize sections. His third book, Capital: A Portrait of Twenty-First-Century Delhi won the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for literary reportage and was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize and the Ondaatje Prize.

Within a short period, he rose to prominence as a leading writer from British novelists, and all his books have been critically well acclaimed. Currently he is working on his fourth novel. Apart from fictional works, he has also published several articles. His third book, Capital: A Portrait of Twenty-First-Century Delhi was also a work of non-fiction. He served as Visiting Fellow in the Humanities at Princeton University in 2012 and has been teaching at Brown University every spring since 2014.
