Ramya Haridas Biography 
Ramya Haridas is a Congress politician and parliamentarian from the state of Kerala. She is only the second dalit female parliamentarian from the state of Kerala, after Dakshayani Velayudhan of Pulaya community, a member of Constituent Assembly of India which acted as India’s first parliament in the 1940s. Ramya became a part of Kerala’s political history, when she got elected to parliament in May 2019 as a member of 17th Lok Sabha. She defeated LDF’s strong candidate by a majority of over 1.5 lakh votes to join parliament for the first time. She is also a social activist and folk singer, who sings folk songs for her public and political functions.
Ramya Haridas hails from Kozhikode and she was born on 11 January 1986 into an under-privileged dalit family. Her active career in politics began in 2011. She was shortlisted in a talent hunt programme conducted by Indian National Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. From there on, Gandhi acted as her mentor, and for 2019 general elections he shielded her as UDF candidate from Alathur constituency, which has a strong hold for LDF for a long time. Alathur constituency consists of Palakkad and parts of Thrissur district. Her mother, a member Kerala Mahila Congress also supported her a lot in her political journey, which started off with Congress’ youth wing in Kerala, KSU.
She was serving as the Block Panchayat President for Kunnamangalam, Kozhikode district when she contested for Lok Sabha elections. In 2019 she became the only female parliamentarian to be elected from the state of Kerala, and also the youngest among all. She was only 32 then. Apart from Ramya, Shanimol Usman was the only female candidate fielded by UDF. However Shanimol became the only UDF candidate from the state to lose parliament elections. Ramya is unmarried.
