Ramprasad Bakshi Biography

Ramprasad Bakshi was a writer, editor, translator and literary critic belonging to Gujarati language. Vangamaya Vimarsha published in 1963 is his major work. He was a recipient of Narmad Suvarna Chandrak in the 1960s for his work Vangamaya Vimarsha and many more awards. He served as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad during 1976-1977. He taught numerous students including Sitanshu Yashaschandra. He guided Sitanshu for his doctoral thesis. Bakshi was graduated in Sanskrit language, and he also studied English. He worked as an editor and translator for many classic works. He lived during the period, 27 June 1894 - 22 March 1989.

Ramprasad Bakshi’s full name is Ramprasad Premshankar Bakshi. He was born on 27 June 1894 in Junagadh, Gujarat. His ancestral home is at Morbi. His school education was completed from Rajkot, Wadhwan. After graduating in Sanskrit language, he moved to Mumbai where he began his professional career as a teacher at Anandilal Poddar High School. Throughout his teaching career he worked in the same school and retired as Principal. He later worked as professor of Gujarati at Mithibai College, Mumbai.

Bakshi was a student of Anandshankar Dhruv and Narsinhrao Divetia. His major works were published in the 1960s when he was at his career peak. Some of his noted literal works include - Natyarasa (1959), Karunarasa (1963), Govardhanramnum Manorajya (1976), Vangamaya Vimarsha (1963) etc. Kathasarita (1977) based on Kathasaritsagara and Gujarati translation of Sukhamani (1935) are other major works. Apart from original works, he also worked as a translator and editor of many popular and classic books. He translated two volumes of Gujarati Language and Literature into his mother tongue.
