Ramesh Chandra Shah Biography

Ramesh Chandra Shah is an Indian writer from Almora, Uttarakhand. He is a poet, critic and writes novels too. He has authored a couple of plays, a travelogue and some essays. For his contributions to Hindi literature, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri. His novel, Vinayak received Sahitya Academy Award. His wife Jyotsna Milan was also a writer, who died in 2014. He currently lives in Bhopal.

 

Ramesh Chandra Shah was born in the year 1937 in Almora, Uttarakhand. He was born into a middle class family with educational background. He took his BA and Master’s in English literature from Allahabad University, and completed MA in 1960. He also obtained a doctoral degree from Agra University, and submitted his thesis, Yeats and Eliot: Perspectives on India. After studies he got into teaching profession. He taught at high schools first and later at colleges in small towns of Madhya Pradesh. Then he moved to Bhopal and continued with his teaching profession. He retired from government service in 1997, and after that took to full time writing. Gobar Ganesh was his first published novel.

 

His published novels include – Gobarganesh, Kissa Gulam, Poorvapar, Aakhiri Din, Aap Kahin Nahin Rehte Vibhooti Babu, Vinayak and Punarvaas. He published short story collections such as Jungle Mein Aag, Muhalle Mein Ravan, Maanpatr, Theater, Pratinidhi Kahaniyan and Katha Sanatan. Maara Jaai Khusro and Matiyaburj are his published plays while Kachue Ki Peeth Par, Harishchandra Aao, Nadi Bhaagti Aayi, Pyaare Muchkund Ko, Dekhte Hain Shabd Bhi Apna Samay, Chaak Par Samay and Bahuvacan are among his poetry collections. His wife is deceased in 2014, and the poet currently lives in Bhopal.
