Ram Shankar Katheria Biography

Ram Shankar Katheria is an Indian politician from the state of Utttar Pradesh, affiliated to Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as a parliamentarian in the 16th Lok Sabha headed by Narendra Modi, and also 15th Lok Sabha headed by Manmohan Singh. He formerly served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the first cabinet ministry of Narendra Modi in 2016 for a brief period. He currently serves as the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes since 2017. He represented the Agra constituency during his both terms as a parliamentarian.

 

Ram Shankar Katheria was born on 21 September 1964 in Nagriya Sarawa, Etawah, UP. Sone Lal and Shanti Devi are his parents. His political career began as an active member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) unit, within in the local politics, and over the years he rose to a prominent politician from UP representing BJP. He worked as a pracharak of the RSS in Agra for 13 years. He holds a PhD from Kanpur University, and started his professional career as a lecturer. He was serving as a Professor of Hindi at the Agra University, before he turned an active politician.

 

In 2009 he successfully contested Lok Sabha elections for the first time, and during his second term he was inducted to Narendra Modi’s cabinet. He was appointed as a National General-Secretary of the BJP in August 2014. He was given charge of the Chhattisgarh and Punjab states a few months later. He has also written a few books related to the subjects of dalits and published them. Katheria is married to Mridula Katheria and the couple has three children.
