Rajeev Sethi Biography

Rajeev Sethi is an artist, designer, scenographer and art curator based in Delhi. Some of his outstanding and famous designs make him an internationally acclaimed artist. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 1986. He has been honoured by the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2001. He has also gained recognition as an interior designer. His mother, Krishna Sethi was a politician and a member of Delhi's first Legislative Assembly. He is currently a Foundation Member of the World Academy of Art and Science, USA. He is curator and founder chairman of Asian Heritage Foundation.

 

Rajeev Sethi was born on 24 May 1949 in Delhi. Both his parents were social workers and freedom fighters. In fact his mother was a member of Delhi's first Legislative Assembly. His father Kishorilal Sethi was a businessman and a poet. He was the youngest of 5 children and had four sisters. Rajeev spent his childhood and younger days in Delhi, where he completed his schooling and college studies. For advanced studies he moved to Paris, where he spent his formative years in art field as well. He went to Paris on an art scholarship and got opportunity to study graphic art.

 

Later he joined as an apprentice to well-known English painter and printmaker Stanley William Hayter. He was also mentored by American well-known designers Ray and Charles Eames, and later worked with Pierre Cardin in his studio. As a designer he designed his first independent work in 1960 and it was Delhi's first discotheque, Cellar at Regal Building, Connaught Place. He founded Asian Heritage Foundation and served as its chairman as well. Terminal 2 - Mumbai Airport, Art at Hyatt, Hampi Airport, Shah House, Mumbai etc are some of his works. He was the first recipient of Indira Gandhi Lifetime Achievement Award for conservation by INTACH.
