Qamar Ul Islam Biography

Qamar ul Islam was an Indian politician from the state of Karnataka. He formerly served as the secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Kerala. He has been elected to state assembly from Kalaburagi-North constituency, and he has also served as cabinet minister. Housing and Labour, Minister of Municipal Administration, Public Enterprises and Minister of Wakf are the portfolios held by him. He entered politics in the second half of 1970s.

 

Qamar ul Islam was born to Noorul Islam in Kalaburagi, Karnataka. He spent his younger days in his hometown where he completed his education. He also completed his engineering studies from Kalaburagi, where he specialized in Mechanical Engineering. Since college days, he was active in students’ politics and was involved with the activities of students’ union. He became the president of the students at PDA College of Engineering where he studied, and he is the only Muslim student to reach this position till now.

 

Later he joined active politics and has been elected as MLA 6 times. He started his political career with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in 1978, and successfully contested state assembly elections as well. He got elected to legislative assembly 5 more times and served as MLA during 1989-1994, 1994-96, 1999-2004, 2008-2013 and 2013-2017. He also served as cabinet minister multiple times.

 

Before he joined politics, he was an engineer by profession. He was a sportsperson, trader and industrialist, social worker and educationist too. Cricket and table tennis were his favourite sports. He also ran a few trusts and charitable societies. He died on 18 September 2017 at Bengaluru due to cardiogenic shock and multi organ failure.
