Priyank M. Kharge Biography

Priyank M. Kharge is a leading politician from the state of Karnataka. He belongs to Indian National Congress. A member of legislative assembly at present, he currently serves as Minister for Social Welfare Government of Karnataka since 2016. He is the son of Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress politician from Karnataka state who currently serves as the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha. Priyank became the youngest minister of Karnataka when he took power at the age of 38. It is his second term in state assembly. He currently represents Chitapur Assembly Constituency of Gulbarga district.

 

Priyank M. Kharge belongs to a family with strong political background. Born as the son of influential political career from south, Mallikarjun Kharge, he too followed the footsteps of his father and has shown his leadership skills quite at a young age. He joined state assembly for the first time at the age of 38 and got inducted to cabinet as well. Like his father who was appointed a Minister of State for Primary Education in the D. Devaraj Urs Ministry in 1973 during his first term as MLA, Priyank too was inducted to the cabinet and given the portfolio – Social Welfare during his first tenure in state legislative assembly. It also created a new record of being the youngest Karnataka minister ever.

 

He is a diploma holder in computer science. He was groomed in politics by his father, who is known for his meticulous planning and mentoring. He entered politics as an activist of the National Student Union of India. He formerly served as vice-president of the Karnataka unit of the Youth Congress for one term. Though he contested president of the State unit of the Youth Congress he couldn’t win the seat.
