Prithwindra Mukherjee Biography

Prithwindra Mukherjee is a researcher who has authored many books on various subjects. He retired as a researcher in the Human and Social Sciences Department (Ethnomusicology) of the French National Centre of Scientific Research in Paris in the year 2003. He is the grandson of the legendary Bengali revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee who is better known as Bagha Jatin. He is a specialist in the French language and literature and has translated many celebrated works to Bengali, for which he is remembered most. His French poetry has been translated into about a dozen languages.

 

Prithwindra was born in Kolkata, India, in 1939 and studied at Sri Aurobindo Ashram School in Pondicherry. He spent his major years at Pondicherry where he completed his education and started his professional career as a teacher. He started writing poems before the age of 20. In 1966 he earned a French scholarship and reached France to complete a thesis. He prepared a thesis on Sri Aurobindo at Sorbonne and stayed there till 1970. Later he started his career as a freelancer journalist apart from producing radio programs related to Indian culture. He also worked as a lecturer on Indian civilization and philosophy. He also completed PhD in Paris.

 

In 1977, he was invited by the National Archives of India as a guest of the Historical Records Commission. He presented different research papers on various subjects at many occasions. He published his Paris life through the literary magazine ‘Desh’ of Kolkata. Later too, he continued his research works on Indian revolutionaries and has travelled to USA as a Fulbright scholar. He was also a founder-member of the French Literary Translators' Association. He has also published a biography on Sri Aurobindo.
