Prapanchan Biography

Prapanchan is a writer and critic from Pondicherry, who is associated with Tamil literature. Prapanchan is the pseudonym of S. Vaidyalingam. He lives in Chennai and Pondicherry. He has authored novels, Short story collections and plays, and is a recipient of numerous literary honours including Tamil Sahitya Akademi Award in1995 for the work Vaanam vasappadum and Coimbatore Kasturi Rangammal Award for Mahanadhi. Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award, Ilakkiya Chinthanai Award for Manudam vellum, Adithanar award for Sandhya and Award for Non-Fiction from The Tamil Literary Garden, Toronto are other major honours.

S. Vaidyalingam was born on April 27, 1945 in Pondicherry. His father ran a toddy shop. He completed his graduation in Tamil literature from Karandhai College, and then started his career as a Tamil teacher in Thanjavur. He also worked as a journalist and editor for different literary magazines over the years. His first short story, Enna ulagamada was published in 1961. Since then he has published 46 books belonging to different genres.  His play Muttai is part of the curriculum in Delhi University. His short story collection Nerru Manidhargal is also a part of Tamil Nadu state college syllabus.

Nerru Manidhargal, Iruttin Vaasal, Oru ooril irandu manidhargal and Vittu Viduthalayagi are his published Short story collections, and Muttai and Akalya are his plays. He has published one novella titled Aangalum Pengalum. Mahanadhi, Vaanam vasappadum, Erodu Thamizhar uyirodu, Sandhya, Kagidha Manidhargal, Manudam vellum, Penmai velga, Padhavi and Kaneeral Kappom are his published novels. He has also published literary critic works in Tamil language. Many of his works have been translated to other Indian and foreign languages. He is married and his wife’s name is Pramila Rani.
