Prabha Varma Biography

Prabha Varma is a poet and lyricist from Malayalam. He is also a prominent figure in journalism and anchored many TV shows as well. In 2016, he won Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for Shyama Madhavam. He also received many major literary awards like Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Arkkapoornima (1995), Vallathol Award (2017), Vayalar Award for Shyama Madhavam (2013), Asan Poetry Prize (2014), P. Kunhiraman Nair Award and many more. He is a recipient of Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyrics twice – "Ethu Sundara Swapna Yavanika" from Nadan in 2013 and “Poovin Ithalcheppil” from Out of Syllabus in 2006.

Prabha Varma was born in the year 1959 at Kadapra, Thiruvalla. He has been a prominent figure in journalism, a media personality as well as a writer and lyricist. Prabha Varma is an Academy award-winning poet in Malayalam. His poems are composed of a confluence of tradition and modernity, which makes his works distinct. He remained a student activist associated with the Students Federation of India during his academic years, prior to his entry to the world of words.

His first anthology of poems was Sourparnika, published in 1990, which received prestigious Vyloppilli Award and Ankanam Award. His second anthology Arkkapoornima got released very soon, which bagged the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award at the age of 37. His poetry works - Chandananazhi, Aaardram, Kalaprayaga, Avicharitham, and Manjinotu Veyil Enna Poleyum just followed. As a lyricist, he is best known for the evergreen romantic song, Oru chembaneer pooviruthu sung by Unni Menon.

He excelled himself as a journalist too, and has won the State Government Award for the best general reporting in 1996. K. C. Sebastian Award and the K. Madhavan Kutty Award for the best feature in English during 1988-1990, and Media trust award are other major awards received in the field of journalism.
