Pearl Padamsee Biography

Pearl Padamsee was one of the leading names of Indian theatre in the 20th century. Mostly associated with English productions, she has also worked in a few movies of which, Khatta Meetha and Baaton Baaton Mein are her most memorable ones. She also played pivot roles in Junoon, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, and Such a Long Journey. She has married twice and separated from both as well. Ranjit Chowdhry – is her son born from first marriage. Second time, she married noted theatre artist Alyque Padamsee, that too resulted in separation. Raell Padamsee and Rahul Padamsee are the kids in this wedlock and it was Alyque Padamsee’s first marriage.

 

She was born in 1931 to a Jewish mother and Punjabi Christian father. She converted to Christianity during the initial years of her life. She has created some memorable plays which audience cherish till now. She along with Alyque Padamsee has run some memorable plays. "The Taming of the Shrew", "The Rise and Fall of Arturo Ui", "Godspell", "Princes" and "Palki" are only a few among her theatric productions. An energetic person, her pleasant and innocent smiles have always captured hearts without any reason. Her real passion was theatre though her dabbling in cinema was curiously incidental.

 

Married twice in life, in her opinion, “marriage by itself might or might not be important, but relationships certainly were”. She directed several upcoming stage artists in the musical Godspell and Rise and Fall of Arturo Ui. She died of a cardiac arrest, at the age of 69, in Mumbai and she was quite active in her field till her death.
