Pawan Kumar Chamling Biography

Pawan Kumar Chamling is a famous politician and author who hasruled Sikkim for 20 years. He is the current and 5th chief minister of Sikkim. Chamling is the founder president of the Sikkim Democratic Front, the party which has ruled the state for four successive terms since 1994 - 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009.In 2009 his party SDF won all 32 assembly seats in Sikkim Legislative Assembly creating history.

He is an author of several books who has published books in Nepali, English and Hindi. Pawan Chamling Kiran is his pen name. He published Party Shikshya Sahitya in 3 volumes. Mo Ku Hun, Antaheen Sapna: Mero Bipana and Praramvik Kavita Haroo are his collections of poems written during the period, 1970 to 1992. Apart from a few books related to politics, he has also done some translation works. His Nepali work has won him Bhanu Puraskar.

Chamling was born in Yangang, South Sikkim in 1950. During 1980s he was actively involved in social and literary activities along with the political activities. He became the president of Yangang Gram Panchayat in 1982 and was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1985. In 1989 he got elected from Damthang constituency and became the Minister for Industries, Information and Public Relations.Chamling formed the Sikkim Democratic Front party in 1993 and came to power in 1994. He became the chief minister of Sikkim and ruled the state continuously for 4 terms in a row.

He is the only Indian politician to achieve this honour, remaining in the same party. He played a significant role in the development of the state and maintaining peace and hence an iconic figure in the political map of Sikkim. Chamling has ruled Sikkim for 20 years and if he is able to repeat the history in the coming Assembly elections, he can break the record of Basu, who ruled West Bengal for long 23 years.
