Parur T. K. Narayana Pillai Biography

Parur T. K. Narayana Pillai, often referred to as Parur T. K was a freedom fighter and congress leader from Kerala. He was the last Prime Minister of Travancore. Following Indian independence, when Thiru-Kochi was formed unifying Travancore and Cochin princely states, he was appointed as the first Chief Minister in 1949. He got associated with state politics since early 1920s, and was one of the prominent leaders from Travancore. Later he served as Minister for Food, Labour and Education in C. Kesavan’s cabinet. After retiring from politics he spent his whole life in writings. Noted playback singers - Sujatha Mohan and Radhika Thilak are his granddaughers, while young singer Swetha Mohan is his great-granddaughter.

 

Parur T. K. Narayana Pillai was born on 25 March 1890 in North Parur, Travancore. He completed his graduation from Union Christian College, Alwaye in 1911. With 1920s he rose to a prominent young leader and was associated with freedom struggle movement. In 1924 he became Taluk President of INC and became Travancore-Cochin secretary of Congress Party in 1932. He became party president in 1938. He was a founding member of the Travancore State Congress. He was one among those prominent leaders who fought against Diwan of Travancore C. P. Ramaswami Iyer in the late 1930s.

 

He became the second and last Prime Minister of Travancore in 1948. He took great measures to suppress communist revolutionary movements in the state, post Indian independence. With great support from his supporters he became the first Chief Minister of Travancore-Cochin. In 1951 he submitted his resignation to the last ruler of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. After retirement from active politics he concentrated on to writing. He passed away on 23 June 1971.
