Parshottam Rupala Biography

Parshottam Rupala is a prominent Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata party, and currently a parliamentarian too. A member of Rajya Sabha representing BJP for the second time, he currently serves as a minister in the central government led by Narendra Modi. He serves as Minister of State for Panchayati Raj since July 2016, and also Minister of State Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare since September 2017. He joined parliament as MP of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat on 4th June 2016, and was inducted to Modi’s cabinet the following day giving portfolio, Panchayati Raj. He has also served three consecutive terms as MLA in Gujarat State Assembly.

Parshottam Rupala was born on 1 October 1954 to Hariben Khodabhai and Khodabhai Madhabhai in Gujarat. He completed his B.Sc. and B.Ed studies from Saurashtra University and Gujarat University in 1977 and started his professional career in a school as Principal. He served as School Principal at Hamapur from 1977 to 1983, before he turned chief officer of the Amreli municipality same year. He served the post for 4 years. After that he turned active in politics, and was associated with Bhartiya Janta Party since 1988.

Over the years he rose to prominent positions within state politics, and later served as MLA for three consecutive terms till 2002. After that he eyed at National level politics, and succeeded in this field as well. During his tenure with state assembly, he has also served as state minister. He was a Cabinet Minister in Narmada for Irrigation and Water Supply in 1995-1996, and also irrigation. He got elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time in 2008 for a brief period, and got re-elected in 2016 in a by-poll following the death of sitting MP Praveen Rashtrapal belonging to Indian national congress.
