Parakala Prabhakar Biography

Parakala Prabhakar is a political economist and political commentator from Andhra Pradesh. He is best known for serving as Communications advisor in the Andhra Pradesh Government, with a cabinet rank. He hosts the shows - Pratidhwani on ETV2 and Namaste Andhra Pradesh on NTV. Well-known politician of BJP and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is his wife. Initially he was associated with Congress party, and since early 2000s he is affiliated to Bharatiya Janata Party. It was the main reason why Nirmala Sitharaman also got into politics. Apart from politics he is also associated with economic and social affairs.

Parakala Prabhakar was born on 2 January 1959 in Narsapuram, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. He was born into a political family. His mother Parakala Kalikamba was an MLA of undivided Andhra Pradesh, while his father Parakala Seshavatharam has also served as an MLA thrice, apart from being a cabinet minister. Nirmala Sitharaman was studying in JNU, where he was a fellow at the same time. After marriage they moved to London, and returned to India in the early 1990s after the birth of their single girl child. He holds doctorate from the London School of Economics.

Born into a political family, he got into active politics during his college days at JNU. He is a political activist who got elected as Student’s president in JNU, affiliated to Congress. Later he lost to CPI (M) at Students' Union Elections of JNU. In 1984, he was appointed as All India Vice President of NSUI Central Committee, and has decorated many other positions. His family was closely associated with P. V. Narasimha Rao during the early 1990s, before he switched to BJP in the early 2000s.
