Panaganti Ramarayaningar Biography

Panaganti Ramarayaningar was an Indian politician and legislator from Srikalahasti, present-day Andhra Pradesh. He served as 2nd and 3rd Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency between 1921 and 1926. He also served as Minister of Local Self-Government during 1920-1926. During the period, 1912-1915, he was a Member of the Imperial Legislative Council of India. He belonged to a Zamindar family, and was affiliated to Justice Party, best known for non-Brahmin movement. He lived during the period, 9 July 1866 – 16 December 1928. He was one of the founder-members of the Justice Party and served as its President from 1925 to 1928.

 

Panaganti Ramarayaningar was born on 9 July 1866 in Kalahasti, Chittoor District, Madras Presidency. He studied Sanskrit, law, philosophy and Dravidian languages for his graduation studies, after academics he joined politics. He was a founding member of Justice Party, officially the South Indian Liberal Federation, best known for the ideologies of Socialism and Anti-Brahminism. He advocated for the ideologies of Anti-Brahminism, and formation of the party is seen as the trigger of the Dravidian Movement, which had a long run in the pre-independent era of South India.

 

When A. Subbarayalu Reddiar formed the first government for Justice Party in 1920, Panaganti Ramarayaningar served as the Minister of Local Self-Government. He became the Chief Minister of Madras Presidency on 11 July 1921 and he completed his term in 3 December 1926. He was an advocate of democracy. He was also a social worker who took efforts for the uplift of lower class people of the society. Following his death, Justice Party faced a decline in the 1930s, and later transformed into the social organisation Dravidar Kazhagam. While a few members supported the move, there were many prominent leaders who opposed it. He passed away on 16 December 1928 aged 62.
