Om Prakash Yadav Biography

Om Prakash Yadav is an Indian politician who currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha since 2014. He belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party, currently serving his second consecutive term in Parliament representing Siwan constituency. The constituency was earlier held by the criminal politician Mohammad Shahabuddin for four consecutive terms since 1996. Yadav defeated Shahabuddin’s wife Hena Shahab in 2009 and 2014 general elections to join parliament. In the previous elections in 2004, he was defeated by Shahabuddin.

Om Prakash Yadav was born on 23 March 1962 in Laheji village of Siwan District, Bihar. He is married to Radhika Devi, and the couple has 6 children. Currently he resides in Malviya Nagar, Siwan District. He is an agriculturist by profession, before he turned active in politics. He was associated with Janata Dal (United) party during his early years of politics, and he got suspended from the party to support the Indian National Congress led coalition, while he got elected as an independent candidate in 2009. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 27 Jan 2014 and successfully contested general elections.

Mohammad Shahabuddin got elected to Parliament for 4 terms from Siwan, Bihar representing the Rashtriya Janata Dal party of Lalu Prasad Yadav. He served as MP for four consecutive terms since 1996. He was convicted in many cases, following which he was debarred from contesting the 2009 general elections. He presented his wife as Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate from Siwan, but lost to Om Prakash Yadav, who got elected to parliament for the first time. The event repeated in 2014 general elections too, when Om Prakash Yadav defeated Hena Shahab to retain his seat. Yadav fought as an independent candidate in 2009, and as BJP candidate in 2014, and won both. He was replaced by Brishin Patel in 2009 elections from the party, but he fought to win as an independent candidate.

2004 general elections touched national headlines for its violence nature. Yadav contested against his long-term opponent Mohammad Shahabuddin in this election too. Shahabuddin was in prison during 2004 general elections. He could fight elections since he was yet to be convicted, and he won by a margin of 100,000 votes. But after the declaration of results, violence spread out. 9 party workers of Om Prakash Yadav of Janata Dal (United) were found murdered, and Yadav too had to flee from the place for security measures.  He waited outside till the newly elected state government worked on providing him security.
