O. P. Jain Biography

Om Prakash Jain, best known as O. P. Jain is an art curator and collector from Delhi. He is a patron of arts, also known as a philanthropist. He served as the chairman of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) for long 15 years. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2003. He is a recipient of many other cultural honours and rewards. Over the years Jain initiated many activities and projects in Delhi for the preservation and nurturing of India's cultural heritage.

 

Om Prakash Jain hails from Old Delhi. He was born into a business family in 1929. His family owned a paper-trading business at Chawri Bazar. He joined family business at a young age without any formal training. In the 1970s he happened to meet renowned writer Mulk Raj Anand which was a turning point of his life. Anand encouraged him to work for art and cultural heritage conservation, and since then he started collecting objects as a hobby. Slowly hobby turned his passion and he later turned an art curator and collector based in Delhi.

 

Over the years he collected kitchen and household items or objects used for daily activities at home or office. In 1984, he set up a small museum where he exhibited his personal collections in Chandni Chowk. After 10 years he established an artist village in the outskirts of Delhi and shifted his collections to Sanskriti Museum of Everyday Art, at Anandagram. He later established Museum of Terracotta Art and Textile also. He currently serves as a promoter of Neemrana Fort Palace Hotels. Founder of Sanskriti Foundation, he currently serves as the chairman and is a member on advisory board.
