Nedumaran Biography

Nedumaran is a noted politician of Tamil Nadu, a writer and Tamil nationalist. He is known for his outspoken nature. He has been a member of Indian national Congress. His full name is Pazha. Nedumaran. He is the editor-in-chief of the by-weekly Tamil magazine Then Seidi and the leader of the Tamil Nationalist Movement. He had a long term association (through vocal support) with LTTE, a liberation movement for Sri Lankan Tamils. He was a close associate of K. Kamaraj, the iconic figure of state politics.

 

He was born on 10 March 1933 in Madurai of Tamil Nadu. His father was Thiru. Ki. Palaniappanar, founder of Madurai Thiruvalluvar Sangam and Secretary of Madurai Tamil Sangam. His mother was Piramu Ammaiyar. Nedumaran’s school education was done at a couple of schools at Madurai - St. Joseph's School and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School. His college education was completed at American College and Thiyagaraja College, both from Madurai. He holds BA (Hons) in Tamil Literature from Annamalai University. In 1958 he took part in the students struggle in Annamalai University and was arrested. He was the General Secretary of Annamalai University Arts and Science Students' Hostel during 1958-59.

 

He organized Tamil National Party in Madurai in the year 1962 and became active in state politics. In 1964, he became organizer of Youth Wing of Indian National Congress in Madurai and in 1970, became its president. During the period 1973 – 1979, he served as the General Secretary of Indian National Congress of Tamil Nadu. In 1979, when Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi visited Tamil Nadu, she was attacked by the D.M.K. Nedumaran who accompanied her, shielded her and bore the attacks on his body and saved her life. After this incident, Indira called Nedumaran as her eldest son. From 1979, till now he serves as the President of Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam. He is a former member of Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly.
